Ian Gray's artistic journey is deeply rooted in the expansive skies of Saskatchewan, where he was born and raised on a farm in Indian Head. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the prairies, Gray developed a lifelong fascination with the sky, influenced by vivid sunsets and stormy clouds. Art runs in his family, with both his mother and grandfather being artists, creating an environment that nurtured his early creativity.
After a successful business career that involved significant travel, Gray fully embraced his passion for art upon retirement. This marked a return to a family tradition of artistic pursuit, shared by his mother, grandfather, father, two sisters, and now his daughter.
Gray’s work focuses on skies, landscapes, seascapes, and birds. He finds inspiration in everyday scenes, often driven by dramatic lighting, shadows, or unique color combinations. His process blends meticulous planning with spontaneity, often using iPhone photos as reference points. Recently, Gray has explored plein air painting, enjoying the fresh challenges it brings.
His style is characterized by bold forms and grand skies. Gray is an exhibitor member with the Federation of Canadian Artists, and his work was recently selected for Art Comp 2024, held at 100 Kelloggs Place in London, Ontario. He is currently represented by The Gallery Coffee House in Indian Head, Saskatchewan
